Schönramer Imperial Stout: Recent years have seen young breweries produce excellent imperial stouts (Great Lakes Brewing, Emelisse, HaandBryggeriet, etc.). That doesn’t mean that an old one can’t do the same. It’s true that this type of stout goes back to the 18th century, and the Private Landbrauerei Schönram was specifically founded in 1780, in Petting (Bavaria, Germany).
I was told that old wine produces vintage quality, and the Bavarian experience is not to be outdone here. This 9.5% ABV Imperial Stout is vigorous, energetic, intense — we could say epicurean for high-alcohol-level enthusiasts…
However, at first it appears quite floral and even light in the nose. Its bitterness dominates and agreeably reduces coffee and chocolate flavours. This beer that lingers in the mouth is “Trinkgenuss zu entfalten” – made to develop drinking pleasure…
