Double Simcoe, by Weyerbacher
Undoubtedly one of the jewels of craft brewing is our dear Simcoe – less well known under its real name: Simcoe® brand YCR 14 cv. It was released in 2000 by Yakima Chief Ranches, a hop farm in the state of Washington, USA. Its bittering properties make it a flagship product for India Pale Ales.
Founded in 1995 by Dan and Sue Weirback, the Weyerbacher Brewing Company (Easton, Pennsylvania) offers a strong IPA – 9% ABV – using 100% Simcoe. Not surprisingly, this beer is bitter (90 IBU), but its characteristics do not stop with that. Simcoe gives it a fine woody and citrusy taste. On the palate, the feeling is surprisingly quite smooth, with zero alcohol aftertaste and a malty presence. To try right now!
